Creating More Space In Your Home

March 10th, 2010

One of the easiest mistakes we all make is to have too many things and therefore too much clutter. If it seems like you’re always running out of room and you have more than you need, here are a few tips on learning how to save space and be more organized.

First of all, start getting rid of what you don’t need. Papers are a big clutter culprit. Old magazines, papers and mail can all be reduced. If you have some clothes you haven’t worn in a long time, give them to the Goodwill. If you haven’t used something in the past six months, it’s a good time to just get rid of it.

One great place for storage is under beds. Stores such as Walmart and Target have storage boxes that can be slid right underneath beds for easy storage. Don’t want your epiphone electric guitar getting ruined? No problem. Just store it in a storage box and safely stow it away under your bed until you need it again.

There are shoe racks that can be hung right over closet doors so you can organize shoes and be rid of closet clutter, as well as sweater cubbies that hang right on your closet rod, and hold multiple sweaters, saving a lot more space in the long run.

If you have a lot of bulky appliances think of ways you can exchange them for smaller, more compact versions. Space heaters can take up a lot of room. There are smaller versions like the Delonghi space heater. They can be stored next to a wall or in a corner. You’ll hardly notice they’re there.

It’s harder to vacuum around clutter, too. It creates much more dust and you won’t want to vacuum weekly if you have to navigate your way around an obstacle course of stuff. Dust also causes allergies and aggravates asthma. Try using a more spacious vacuum like the Dyson upright vacuum cleaner. It can be more easily stored in a closet.

As a rule go through your things every few months and see what you do and don’t need. There’s bound to be some things you can part with. You’ll maintain your clutter this way and feel much better once it’s gone from your life. Your home will be more spacious and you’ll find yourself more organized.
