How energy saving kitchen appliances can save your money and the environment

October 19th, 2009

In recent years with the cost of energy resources such as oil, coal and other traditional fuels we’ve seen an equal rise in our energy bills also unfortunately. There is only so much you can do by switching energy companies before you realise that your supplier may not be the problem, it could be you. Specifically it could be your usage and any habits you may have such as leaving lights on or leaving TVs on standby as opposed to turning them off completely.

Many homeowners are now more aware of their usage and have stomped out any bad habits. The next step is to replace wasteful or appliances that are not energy efficient with newer more efficient versions. Many electrical appliances can be broken down into their components and recycled. A surprising percentage of our home appliances can be recycled which should be encouraged as some appliances such as fridges and televisions contain harmful chemicals which can leak if the appliance is simply dumped and forgotten about.

Most new appliances will be clearly marked as having energy saving features. If you were to buy say an energy efficient washing machine and dryer they will use less water and operate at lower temperatures which should start lowering your energy and utility bills. The process may take some time but as more and more appliances in your house become energy efficient then your energy consumption should really start to drop.

Televisions have long been a problem with many people leaving their sets on standby when they go off to bed. This may give the illusion that the TV is turned off but in actual fact they continue to sip away at your electricity the whole time. Quite a lot of home appliances will use up these little bits of electricity throughout the day and if there’s enough of them then there’s a large amount of electricity being wasted every day.

A microwave oven with a digital display will use small amount of electricity but could easily be switched off at the mains when you are not using it, or opting for a model with no display at all. Lighting Is another aspect of home life that gets ignored. Leaving lights on when we go out or when we leave the room is a sure fire way to increase your energy consumption. Using energy saving bulbs as well as not leaving lights on can bring down your energy consumption significantly too.

With energy costs being notoriously high at the moment it’s wise to invest in more energy efficient appliances when buying new home electrical goods as it could save you money in the long term.
