Making Wise Purchases For Your Home.

June 25th, 2010

Our home is dear to us, much like your home may be to you and your family. As individuals, we want our homes to represent our individual tastes and styles. In our home we decided to paint the walls a soft subtle sage green color, we have black iron and clear crystal candle holders to complement the black dining room set. It appears cool and elegant on the stunning warm hard wood floors.

These simple tips are how I managed to create the dining room of my dreams with a little ingenious repairs and some tough negotiating with a manager at my local store. My family had been in dire need of a new dining room set, and the one before us in the store seemed the perfect solution. The only problem was that there was only the display set. Many customers had tested them and the wear and tear was evident. We discussed purchasing the display with the manager.

It was a simple matter to sand down the furniture and buy matching stain and refinish the table and chairs. Perhaps the hardest part was trying to get the stain out of the table. You may be surprised to discover that many shopping outlets will consider negotiating a sale of display items when they no longer have the stock available. If the materials that make up the furniture seem sturdy enough you may be making a fantastic deal.

My son has recently grown out of the style of his bed and we had been on the look out for a new one. As we were walking through a local store, we had come across a lovely his and hers set of loft beds with desk attached. We immediately spoke with a sales representative. Both the beds were displaying the price for beds straight from the shipping box as both displays had minor damage.

The representative checked to see if they had one in back or if it was in stock at another location. Neither location had the boys bed, and there was not anything available in their warehouse. I inquired as to whether they would be willing to allow the sale of the floor demonstrative models and he went to verify that with a manager.

A manager came to negotiate a price, and I managed to get a discounted price because it was a floor model. A little elbow grease sanding down the scratches and nicks really was worth the bargain. Many stores will consider selling the floor models to customers, especially when they do not currently have the model you are looking for. Sometimes it can be worth it to simply ask, you never know unless you try.

Just ensure that the shade of the stain matched well with the current stain. Within a few days I had a loft bed that was flawless. You would never be able to tell that it had been damaged. I managed to have a little extra cash to get my son a new bed sheet and comforter set with the money I saved.

If you want to try more advance projects, you may consider re-staining your kitchen cabinets or possibly your hard wood floors. For very large projects it is recommended that you use safety equipment such as a face mask so you do not inhale the sawdust. Smaller projects may include a dresser drawer or an end table. It can really save you quite a bit of cash.

5 Simple Tips for Arrange Furniture in Your Living Room

April 21st, 2010

One common decorating difficulty that often occurs in the family room involves figuring out how to arrange the furniture to maximize the potential of the room. The whole arrangement should seem natural and comfortable while at the same time highlighting the best features of the room. Here are 5 suggestions for making the most out of your room’s potential when arranging your furnishings.

1. Consider the Location of the Doorways
Some family rooms have two doorways, whereas other may have only one. To ensure that the room flows well, take care to keep the locations of the doorways in mind when arranging your furniture. If you have two doorways leading into the room, you want to arrange things so that people don’t walk across the “conversational area” when moving from one doorway to the next. On the other hand, for rooms with one doorway, be sure the furniture is easily accessible, so people don’t have to walk all the way around the room to sit down.

2. Take into Consideration the Walls
Place your biggest piece of furniture, such as a big sofa or wooden tv stand, against the longest wall in the family room. That wall can also be made into a focal point for the room by placing something like an entertainment center there. Then you can arrange your other furniture around this space.

3. Leave Plenty of Space between the Furniture Pieces
One important thing to consider when arranging your family room furniture is to be sure you’ve left plenty of walking space in between the furnishings. You want people to have adequate space in which to walk around the room but still have things close enough so the space is intimate. {If you’re able to strike a balance, then people will have a comfortable amount of space to walk, but when seated, they won’t be so far away that the space isn’t intimate anymore.} No one wants to be bumping into furniture right and left when walking around. But on the other hand, you also don’t want people to have to shout in order to talk to one another.

4. Make Sure the Furniture Balances Properly
You don’t want to arrange all your larger furnishing on one side of the room. Otherwise, the space is going to look completely off balance. For instance, don’t place a large sofa next to a large recliner, and then put a small chair and mission end table across the room. When you mix your larger and smaller pieces, you’ll achieve balance in the room both horizontally and vertically.

5. The Furniture Arrangement Should Be Functional
One important factor to keep in mind when arranging family room furniture is that it needs to be functional. After all, the purpose of a family room tends to be more casual, sort of a hangout room. Thus, if you’ve designated this space as a place for your family to watch movies together, then you need to be sure that enough of the seating faces the television screen so that everyone is comfortable. If your family room isn’t functional, you’ll be wasting the space, no matter how stylish the room ends up looking.

Following these simple suggestions should make arranging the furniture in your living room much less of a challenge. This way, you can have a stylish, comfortable, and functional family room to enjoy.
